This sophisticated Viennese winery operates nearly entirely by hand and has a nearby eco resort. Plus: Where to eat and stay nearby.
The 31-year-old third-generation winemaker Claus Preisinger has bucked local tradition—he produces Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc in addition to the usual Blaufraenkisch and Zweigelt, and works almost entirely by hand. His aesthetic isn’t retrograde, just minimalist: Preisinger’s winery was designed by the Viennese studio Propeller Z, which created a spectacular elongated concrete-and-larch-wood shell with a cantilevered roof. In the tasting area, trapezoidal concrete benches contrast with detailed wooden shelves that contain Preisinger’s finest bottles.
